Modeling human color categorization: Color discrimination and color memory
نویسنده
چکیده
Color matching in Content-Based Image Retrieval is done using a color space and measuring distances between colors. Such an approach yields nonintuitive results for the user. We introduce color categories (or focal colors), determine that they are valid, and use them in two experiments. The experiments conducted prove the difference between color categorization by the cognitive processes color discrimination and color memory. In addition, they yield a Color Look-Up Table, which can improve color matching, that can be seen as a model for human color matching.

Evolutionary models of color categorization based on discrimination
Specifying the factors that contribute to the universality of color categorization across individuals and cultures is a longstanding and still controversial issue in psychology, linguistics, and anthropology. This article approaches this issue through the simulated evolution of color lexicons. It is shown that the combination of a minimal perceptual psychology of discrimination, simple pragmati...
متن کاملModeling developmental and linguistic relativity effects in color term acquisition
We model two patterns related to the acquisition of color terms in Russian and English: children produce overextension errors for some colors but not others, and language-specific distinctions affect color discrimination in a non-linguistic task. Both effects, as well as a reasonable convergence with adult linguistic behavior, are shown by a Self-Organizing Map trained on naturalistic input. We...

Since the 1960’s color categorization and naming has been extensively investigated from the point of view of anthropology, linguistics, psychology, philosophy, color perception studies, and computer modeling; and recently the World Color Survey (WCS ) has provided further support for a view favoring the cross–cultural universality of color categorization (Kay & Regier 2003, Kay 2005, Regier, Ka...
متن کاملEvolutionary model of the concepts of ‘color chip’ and ‘color category’ in Evolutionary models of color categorization based on discrimination
Komarova et al. (2007) showed that a color naming system could be evolved by combining perceptual discrimination, basic pragmatic constraints on communication, and simple learning rules. Their system relied on a fixed number of color chips and of color categories. Here, I construct an evolutionary game theory model where the equivalent concept of the former and the number of the latter are emer...
متن کاملColor Language Does Not Affect Chromatic Thresholds
Speakers of languages that differ in their color vocabulary perform differently on a range of supra-threshold categorization tasks and these variations are predicted by their respective color vocabulary. Here we compare two language groups (English and Herero) who have different color vocabularies for the green-blue region of color space. Discrimination thresholds were compared for English and ...
